New CEO welcomed by the Citrus Growers’ Association.

Dr. Boitshoko Ntshabele takes the Helm at the Citrus Growers Association as the New CEO

The Citrus Growers’ Association of Southern Africa (CGA) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Boitshoko Ntshabele as its new Chief Executive Officer. He will lead the association that champions the vital role the citrus industry plays in South African agriculture and the economy. The CGA represents over 1,560 citrus growers across South Africa, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia.

Dr. Ntshabele: A Leader with a Wealth of Experience

As the new CEO, Dr. Ntshabele brings extensive experience in academia, the private sector, and the public sector. For the past five years, he served as Director of Biosecurity at the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development (DALRRD).

Trained as a veterinarian, he previously held leadership roles at Onderstepoort Biological Products and served as Minister Counsellor Agriculture at the South African Embassy to Belgium, Luxemburg, and the Mission to the European Union (2015–2019).

Advocacy for Citrus Growers

Dr. Ntshabele’s successful track record in management, policy development, and international negotiations positions him as a knowledgeable advocate for citrus growers. The South African citrus industry, which is predominantly export-oriented, generates over R30 billion annually in foreign revenue.

Expanding Market Access and Sustainability

As the new CEO, “I am looking forward to helping shape the future of the local citrus industry. This is a crucial time for the sector. We must ensure the projected growth in citrus production translates into increased economic opportunities. A key to achieving that is expanding market access for our growers,” says Dr. Ntshabele.

He takes office on 1 February and emphasizes sustainability as a priority. “True sustainability is of little meaning if it does not embrace inclusive growth. The citrus industry must continue building on its exceptional work. If all obstacles are removed, Southern African citrus can create even more significant economic opportunities for all,” the new CEO added.

Support from CGA Leadership

CGA Chairperson Gerrit van der Merwe expressed his enthusiasm for the new chapter under Dr. Ntshabele’s leadership: “We are excited to start this new chapter in the CGA’s history with Dr. Ntshabele as the new CEO. He has our full confidence and support.”

Outgoing CEO Justin Chadwick also welcomed the appointment: “I have known Dr. Ntshabele for many years, and I am thrilled that he has accepted the post of CEO of the CGA. His calm reasoning and diplomacy will be a tremendous asset as the industry strives for growth during increasingly uncertain times. I wish Dr. Ntshabele well as he takes the organisation forward.”

A New Era for the Citrus Industry

After 25 years as CEO, Justin Chadwick is retiring at the end of March. Reflecting on his tenure, he stated: “I have been incredibly fortunate to have been CEO for the past 25 years, and I have no doubt that Dr. Ntshabele will take the CGA from strength to strength.” Dr. Ntshabele’s appointment marks a promising new era for the CGA and the citrus industry in Southern Africa.
